A banned Chhatra League leader has been accused of entering a house in Sylhet's Bishwanath and beating up a Chhatra Dal leader named Abdul Majid Bakul over a comment on Facebook.

The incident took place on Wednesday (September 9) at around 7:30 pm in the TNT Road area of ​​the municipal town. The injured Bakul is the joint general secretary of Bishwanath Municipal Chhatra Dal and the accused Shamim Ahmed is the vice-president of the Upazila Chhatra League.

According to local sources, when Shamim Ahmed posted negative comments about BNP and its leaders and activists on his Facebook ID, Bakul responded in the comments section. As a result, Bakul's house was attacked on Wednesday evening.

He was rescued in an injured condition and was first admitted to the Bishwanath Upazila Health Complex and later to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

It is learnt that after the attack, Shamim took refuge at the house of Habibur Rahman Habib, the general secretary of the Upazila Sramik League. When Chhatra Dal leaders and activists gathered there on the news, he escaped by stealth.

In protest of the incident, the Upazila and Municipal Chhatra Dal held a protest procession and street meeting in Bishwanath Municipality on Thursday (September 10) afternoon. The street meeting gave a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the accused Shamim.

Municipal Chhatra Dal convener Fakhrul Islam Reza warned that strict action would be announced if Shamim was not arrested within the stipulated time.

Meanwhile, rumors spread in the area that the police had arrested Habibur Rahman, the Sramik League leader whose house Shamim had taken refuge in, but the administration has clarified the matter.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bishwanath Police Station Gazi Mahbubur Rahman said on Friday (September 11) afternoon that no one had filed a written complaint with the police station regarding the attack on the Chhatra Dal leader until Friday afternoon, but the police are investigating the matter.

And Sramik League leader Habibur was arrested on Wednesday night in an old regular case against him and sent to court the next day.
