A court has sentenced Dulal Hossain alias Dulu to death for burning his wife to death for demanding dowry in Keraniganj, Dhaka. He has also been fined Tk 2 lakh. Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka's Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 announced the verdict on Sunday.
State lawyer Md. Ershad Alam (George) said that the court has ordered the Dhaka District Magistrate or Collector to sell the accused's immovable and movable properties, collect the fine money and give it to the affected family.
However, the other four accused in the case have been acquitted as the charges were not proven. They are Dulal's brother Harun, sister-in-law Morshena, sister Sumaiya and brother-in-law Raju. In addition, Dulal's mother Zarina Begum was exempted from the case as she died during the trial.
According to court sources, Sharmin married Dulal in 2001. They have a daughter. Since the marriage, Dulal had been physically torturing Sharmin at various times, demanding a dowry of two lakh taka. In continuation of this, on September 17, 2016, at one stage of the beating, kerosene was poured on Sharmin's body and set on fire.
Hearing her screams, neighbors rescued her and first admitted her to Mitford Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Upon receiving the news, Sharmin's mother Mosa. Momela went to the hospital and found out that her daughter had suffered 85 percent burns. After undergoing treatment for a long time, Sharmin died on September 30 of the same year.
In this incident, the victim's mother filed a case with Keraniganj Model Police Station, accusing Dulal's mother Zarina and six others. After the investigation, Keraniganj Model Police Station SI AKM Saiduzzaman submitted a charge sheet to the court on January 31, 2017. After taking testimony from a total of 9 people and presenting arguments in a long trial, the court today found the accused guilty and announced the verdict.
