Mishti Akter sought to formalize her romantic relationship. Hoping to turn a nearly four-year-long romance into marriage, she went to her boyfriend's house and has been staying there for six days. However, instead of marriage, she alleges she faced attempts to evict her and suffered physical abuse. Eventually, local residents rallied behind Mishti, staging a road blockade and protest to demand the marriage take place.
On Tuesday afternoon (September 15), local residents held a protest march and blocked the road in the Porabhita-Taratia area of Parramrampur Union, Dewanganj Upazila.
According to local sources, Mishti Akter from Uttar Sapmari village had been in a relationship with Jibon Miah from the Taratia-Porabhita area of Hatibhanga Union for about four years. Both families were aware of the relationship, and discussions and arbitration sessions regarding their marriage had taken place on several occasions. However, Jibon's family did not agree to the marriage.
Mishti's elder sister, Khushi Parvin, said, "Last Thursday, Jibon took Mishti from home on his motorcycle under the pretext of marriage. Later, when Mishti arrived at Jibon's house, he left the premises. She alleges that Jibon's family members subsequently tried to force her out of the house and physically assaulted her."
She added, "My sister has been sitting in that house for days. She simply wants to get married and settle down. Several arbitration attempts have failed to yield a solution."
Rahim, a participant in the protest, said, "The young woman has been staying at Jibon's house for several days. She has been subjected to abuse. This matter needs to be resolved quickly."
Another protester, Sabbir, said, "There have been multiple arbitration meetings regarding this incident, but no agreement was reached. We want a quick and fair resolution to the matter."
Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dewanganj Police Station, stated, "So far, the young woman's family has not filed a formal complaint with the police. They have been given legal advice. Action will be taken in accordance with the law once a complaint is received."
