Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief and Chairman of the Hospital Management Committee, visited the site of the fire at Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) Hospital.
He visited the hospital around 11:00 AM on Wednesday (September 16, 2026). In addition to inspecting the situation on the ground following the fire, the State Minister participated in a special review meeting held at the hospital's administrative office.
Officials from the hospital administration, including Abu Wahab Akand Wahid—Vice-Chairman of the Hospital Management Committee and Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-4 (Sadar)—were present at the meeting.
After the meeting, Abu Wahab Akand Wahid informed the media that there was no evidence of any deaths caused by a stampede or trampling during the panic following the fire. However, he noted that two individuals had died due to illness and the panic caused by the fire.
Meanwhile, instructions have been issued to reconstitute and strengthen the existing five-member investigation committee tasked with determining the actual cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. Under the State Minister's directive, the reconstituted committee has been asked to submit a detailed report on the cause and damage as quickly as possible.
During the inspection and review meeting, the issue of four out of the hospital's five main staircases being locked also emerged as a matter of serious concern. The State Minister and local administration officials demanded an explanation from the hospital authorities regarding why most of the staircases were kept locked during an emergency.
Additionally, engineers were instructed to rapidly prepare necessary renovation and management plans to handle the patient load and the pressure of excess patients following the incident.
During his visit, the State Minister emphasized the need for vigilance among all concerned parties and stressed the importance of strengthening hospital security and emergency response measures.
He also urged journalists to report on the fire incident and the subsequent situation based on objective and verified information.
