Discussions regarding potential candidates for the upcoming Union Parishad elections have begun in the Amtali Upazila of Barguna. Prospective chairman candidates across various unions are already announcing their intentions to run. Md. Baten Dewan—Joint Convener of the Union BNP and a Panel Chairman of the Union Parishad—is among those being discussed as a potential candidate for the chairmanship of the No. 3 Athargachhia Union.
Conversations with locals reveal that Baten Dewan has actively participated in party programs and public outreach campaigns across various areas in anticipation of the national parliamentary elections. His supporters claim that this activity has sparked discussions about his potential candidacy within local political circles and among a segment of the electorate.
Baten Dewan stated, "With the unwavering support of the people, I aim to build an Athargachhia Union Parishad that is free from terrorism and drugs, creates employment for unemployed men and women, and offers modern amenities. There will be no discrimination between the rich and the poor; everyone will enjoy equal rights and dignity."
He further mentioned that his long-standing political activities have led to various legal cases and even imprisonment. He asserts that, within a democratic framework and guided by party leadership, he wishes to work for the country's development and the welfare of local residents in the future.
Local voter Md. Bashir Khan said, "We want to see Md. Baten Dewan as the UP Chairman to fulfill our expectations."
Another voter, Md. Sohrab Mridha, remarked, "Md. Baten Dewan steps forward whenever ordinary people face problems. He is available to us at any time, day or night."
Local resident Dr. Atal Chandra Halder said, "He is a quiet and gentlemanly person. He enjoys popularity among the locals as a potential candidate."
However, alongside the support for Baten Dewan, the names of other potential candidates are also being discussed among the locals. Voter Abbas Bepari noted, "We find Md. Baten Dewan by our side whenever ordinary people face difficulties."
Meanwhile, voter Kamal Munshi expressed the view that Baten Dewan might contest the election if he secures the party's nomination and support. According to locals, some leaders and activists from the union-level units of the BNP, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal are actively campaigning for Baten Dewan. However, no formal decision or nomination regarding this matter has yet been finalized by the party leadership.
Baten Dewan said, "I want to work for the common people of Athargachhia Union. If given the opportunity, I will work to transform Athargachhia Union into a model union, in accordance with the directives of the party's policymakers."
He further added that he intends to implement long-term plans to improve education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment opportunities, and civic services within the union.
It is worth noting that Athargachhia is the No. 3 Union Parishad of Amtali Upazila. According to data from the government's Union Service Portal, the union covers an area of 11,269 acres and had a population of 23,444 as per the 2011 census.
