Police have recovered the hanging body of Mariyam Khatun—the second wife of the controversial Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament (MP) Gazi Nazrul Islam—from a flat in the NAM Bhaban complex, located opposite the Parliament House in the capital.
A major controversy erupted last July after a video featuring MP Nazrul and 19-year-old Mariyam circulated on social media.
Although he claimed Mariyam as his second wife at the time, Nazrul faced nationwide criticism and immense political pressure, eventually leading to his expulsion from the party by Jamaat.
Ibn Mizan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Tejgaon Division of Police, said, "The hanging body of Mariyam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP GM Nazrul Islam, was found in flat 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 at NAM Bhaban. A CID forensic team and the PBI are currently working at the scene."
Fazlul Karim, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, stated that they received the information around 5:30 PM, though the incident likely occurred between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM.
When the video showing intimate moments between MP Nazrul and Mariyam at a hotel in Dhaka's Moghbazar area went viral on Facebook last July, Jamaat leaders initially claimed it had been fabricated using artificial intelligence (AI).
Subsequently, the MP posted a statement on his Facebook page asserting that the woman was indeed his second wife.
He wrote, "On July 13, 2026, accompanied by my first and second wives—Mst. Maksudha Begum and Mst. Mariyam Begum, respectively—I visited the business office of my second wife's father, Md. Masum Billah, in the capital's Moghbazar area. We stayed there for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes." The MP stated, “While we were at the office, before performing the Zuhr prayers, my driver—who is also the maternal uncle of my second wife—Obaidullah went outside, claiming he needed to check the car. He subsequently returned to our room with five to seven unidentified individuals, held us hostage, and extorted one lakh taka from us.
“Later, in collusion with Obaidullah, the rented vehicle I use for transportation was also detained, and demands for several lakh taka were made in installments. When we refused to pay, we were subjected to various threats. I subsequently learned that this conspiracy was orchestrated due to a long-standing enmity and family feud between Obaidullah and my second wife’s father, Md. Masum Billah.”
Following the controversy surrounding the video incident, Gazi Nazrul Islam was expelled from the party.
