Zakirul Haque, the Joint General Secretary of the Jamalpur District Chatra Dal, has been expelled following a Facebook post in which he wrote, "I apologize to those I asked to vote for the 'Sheaf of Paddy' [the BNP's election symbol]. I beg of you, brothers—please do not send me any more SMS messages or calls."
This information was announced on Monday night (September 22) in a notification signed by Jahangir Alam, the Office Secretary of the central Chatra Dal. The notice stated that Zakirul Haque was expelled from his organizational post based on specific allegations of violating organizational discipline. He is a resident of Madarganj Upazila.
"If I am expelled for speaking up for the common people of the country, I still do not believe I have done anything wrong. Is speaking for the people a crime?"
Speaking over the phone regarding the matter, Zakirul Haque explained that during the election, he had canvassed for votes in favor of the 'Sheaf of Paddy,' and many people had indeed voted for it. Later, following a hike in fuel prices, ordinary citizens began contacting him via SMS and phone calls to express their strong dissatisfaction. His Facebook post was intended to highlight their anger and suffering.
Expressing no regret over his expulsion, Zakirul said, "If I am expelled for speaking up for the common people of the country, I still do not believe I have done anything wrong. Is speaking for the people a crime?"
However, Atiqul Islam, the President of the District Chatra Dal, considers the decision to expel Zakirul to be justified. He stated that Zakirul was expelled on charges of violating party discipline.
