Allegations have surfaced that a helpless woman—evicted from her rented home in Sreepur, Gazipur, due to unpaid rent—was raped in front of her two young children after being lured with the promise of shelter and money. Following this harrowing incident, when she sought justice from local traders, they merely handed her 500 Taka and sent her away.
Deeply distraught and humiliated, the woman attempted suicide by throwing herself and her two children under a bus. Locals subsequently rescued her. This brutal incident took place last Tuesday night in the Maona Chowrasta area of Sreepur.
The victim (25) stated that after her husband abandoned the family, she lived in a rented room in Sreepur with her two children, earning a living by begging. As she had several months of outstanding rent, the landlord evicted her and her children last Tuesday night. Left with no other option, she sat beneath the flyover at Maona Chowrasta.
At that time, Sohrab Hossain—a local betel leaf vendor originally from Netrokona—approached her and asked about her situation. He then lured her to a secluded spot on the east side of the intersection under the pretext of providing shelter and financial aid, where he forcibly raped her.
Speaking through tears, the woman said, "My three-and-a-half-year-old son understands everything. He [the attacker] snatched the child away from my embrace and violated me. I cried, but he wouldn't let me go."
After the assault, the woman approached local traders, recounted the incident, and demanded justice. Instead of offering redress, the traders simply handed her 500 Taka and dismissed her.
Overcome by despair at the lack of justice, she attempted suicide on Thursday afternoon by throwing herself under a bus at Maona Chowrasta. Bystanders witnessed the attempt, rescued her, and took her to a local betel leaf wholesale depot.
Upon receiving the news, police from Sreepur Police Station arrived at the scene and spoke with the woman and the traders present. The woman was subsequently taken to the police station. She filed a case there as the plaintiff under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Mohammad Shahinur Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station, stated on Friday morning that a case has been registered against one individual for the rape, and the process of the victim's medical examination is underway. The accused, a paan shop owner named Sohrab Hossain, has been absconding since the incident, and intensive efforts are being made to arrest him.
Meanwhile, locals had detained two individuals at the scene and handed them over to the police. Police reported that, following interrogation, the two were arrested under Section 54 and subsequently produced before the court.
