The High Court has granted six months' interim bail to Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the prime accused in the murder case of scrap dealer Lal Chand—alias Sohag—committed in front of the capital's Mitford Hospital.
Simultaneously, the court issued a rule asking why Mohin should not be granted permanent bail.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Ruhul Quddus and Justice Syed Hasan Zubair issued this order and rule last Monday following a hearing on the bail petition. The matter came to light today, Thursday.
Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shazia Sharmin said today, "The High Court granted Mohin interim bail in the Sohag murder case on the grounds that there were no specific allegations against him."
However, Attorney General Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol told reporters, "The state will file an application (leave to appeal) seeking a stay on the bail order."
According to case records, on July 9 of last year, a group of miscreants killed 39-year-old Sohag on Rajani Ghosh Lane near Mitford Hospital by hacking him with sharp weapons and repeatedly striking him with bricks and stones.
The incident sparked widespread discussion after a video of it circulated on social media.
The following day, the victim's elder sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a murder case at Kotwali Police Station, naming 19 individuals and accusing another 15 to 20 unidentified persons.
On July 12 of this year, the Dhaka First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court framed charges against 21 individuals in the case.
Lawyer Mohammad Asaduzzaman represented Mohin during the hearing on the bail petition.
