The number of dengue cases is steadily rising in Lalmohan Upazila, Bhola. From children to the elderly, no one is spared from this mosquito-borne disease. Every day, patients—accompanied by their relatives—arrive at the Upazila Health Complex suffering from fever and other symptoms of dengue.
According to the Health Complex, the dengue outbreak has been ongoing in the Upazila for the past month and a half. In the first 10 days of October, 25 dengue patients were admitted to the Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Previously, 45 patients were admitted and treated in September. Currently, four dengue patients are undergoing treatment at the facility.
Meanwhile, many individuals with dengue-like symptoms are also visiting the outpatient department of the Upazila Health Complex. Dr. Md. Yusuf Hossain, a Medical Officer (Unani) on duty in the outpatient department, noted that a significant number of patients arrive daily with symptoms of dengue. Due to a lack of awareness, some are reluctant to undergo diagnostic testing. However, among those who do get tested, at least five out of every ten are diagnosed with dengue, he added.
He further explained that patients whose condition is stable receive necessary treatment through the outpatient department, while those in poorer health are advised to be admitted to the hospital.
Among those currently receiving treatment at the Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex is Mosa. Surma Begum, a resident of the Kartarhat area (Ward No. 1, Ramaganj Union).
Describing her illness, she shared that it began with a sudden fever. She initially took medication from a local pharmacy, but when the fever persisted for over a week and she became extremely weak, she traveled to the Upazila headquarters to consult a specialist. Following diagnostic tests, she was diagnosed with dengue. She has now been undergoing treatment at the Health Complex for the past three days.
Surma Begum mentioned that doctors and nurses check on her regularly; however, as most medications are unavailable at the hospital, she has had to purchase many of the necessary drugs from outside. At the 50-bed Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex, patients are being admitted not only for dengue but also for measles, pneumonia, and diarrhea. According to data from the health complex, 19 patients were admitted with measles during the first 10 days of this month. Previously, in September, 44 patients were treated for measles, while 121 were treated for pneumonia and 181 for diarrhea.
Dr. Abu Mahmud Talha Sadi, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer for Lalmohan, stated that despite a shortage of doctors and nurses, the existing staff are working together to provide dedicated care to all patients.
Regarding the availability of medicines, he noted that the health complex does not always stock every type of medication. However, the medicines that are available are provided to patients free of charge as needed. If a shortage of any specific medication arises, it will be assessed, and appropriate measures will be taken.
Dr. Abu Mahmud Talha Sadi further emphasized that public awareness is crucial for dengue prevention. Stagnant water—found in places such as rooftops, flower pots, discarded containers, drums, and tires—must be cleared regularly to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. He advised using mosquito nets and repellents, and wearing clothing that covers the body to protect against mosquito bites.
He added that one should not ignore a fever and must seek medical advice. It is particularly important to go to a hospital immediately if symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, extreme weakness, or difficulty breathing occur.
As the number of patients suffering from dengue and other illnesses continues to rise in Lalmohan, relevant authorities stress the urgent need to increase public awareness regarding the destruction of mosquito breeding grounds, the maintenance of cleanliness, and the importance of seeking prompt medical treatment.
