Dr. Tahira Murtaza, a doctor at Lutheran Hospital, has been accused of providing wrong treatment to several patients, including a pregnant woman, in Dumki, Patuakhali.
The father of one of the victims, Md. Jalilur Rahman, filed a written complaint with the Patuakhali Civil Surgeon on June 21.
According to the complaint, on June 16, when his daughter Jannatul Jemi went to Dr. Tahira Murtaza, a gynecologist at Lutheran Hospital, for a pregnancy checkup, she gave the woman various tests. She asked her to get admitted to Lutheran Hospital. She also threatened that if she did not get admitted and did not take the treatment as per her prescription, the unborn child would be harmed. She prescribed 12 types of medicines, including four types of injections. The pregnant woman panicked and went to Patuakhali the next day instead of getting admitted to Lutheran Hospital and showed her to gynecologist Dr. Ferdousi Akhter Nargis. He told the pregnant woman that there was no problem with her unborn child. He prescribed some medicine. She is currently healthy. He claims that if she had taken the treatment as per Dr. Tahira's prescription, the unborn child could have been harmed. He demanded an investigation and action for the wrong treatment by Dr. Tahira Murtaza of Lutheran Hospital. There are also many allegations of wrong treatment against the doctor.
On July 13 last year, a pregnant patient named Fahima Akhtar damaged her bladder while undergoing a cesarean section, causing a commotion in the area. A settlement was reached with the patient's relatives and compensation for the wrong treatment was given. In this regard, the patient's husband Md. Solayman Hossain said that he had suffered huge financial losses due to Dr. Tahira's wrong treatment. Moreover, he had to close his business and stay in Barisal with his wife for a month. He is also demanding justice for this.
A relative of a patient named Sohag said that his aunt's breathing problems increased after the doctor gave her a blood injection, and later when she was taken to Dhaka, her aunt died seven days later. He demanded that a good gynecologist be appointed at Lutheran Hospital. Then no patient would die due to wrong treatment.
On the other hand, on February 21 this year, when a premature newborn was delivered by cesarean section, the newborn started having breathing problems. Later, he sent him to Patuakhali Hospital and from there to Barisal. The newborn died on the way from Barisal to Dhaka. When heated discussions and criticism started about this, the director of the institution, Dr. Greiner Marak, discussed with the victims and waived the medical expenses from his own fund. However, Greiner Marak has diverted the issue of compensation and pointed to the medical expenses.
Dr. Tahira Murtaza said that the allegations made against her are not true. She asked the patient to be admitted because the pregnant woman had low water in her stomach. If the Civil Surgeon asks about this, he will give a detailed answer.
Dumki Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Mir Shahidul Hasan Shahin said he has received a copy of a complaint from the civil surgeon.
Patuakhali Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Khaledur Rahman Mia said he is in Dhaka on official business. He will return to work on Wednesday and take action after investigating the complaint.
