The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and three others to death in a case filed for crimes against humanity in the shooting death of a young man hanging from a cornice in the capital's Rampura during the July uprising.

In addition, the then Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Rampura police outpost Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, who was arrested in the case, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A three-member judicial panel led by International Crimes Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder announced the verdict at 12:25 pm on Sunday (June 28). The remaining members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The death sentences were handed down to former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam and former OC of Rampura Police Station Md. Mashiur Rahman.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment were former Sub-Inspector (SI) of Rampura Police Station Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan.

The verdict reading began at 11:48 am today. First, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim sought permission to broadcast the verdict live on Bangladesh Television (BTV). Then, subject to permission, the proceedings were shown live on BTV.

At the beginning, Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza read out the charges against the accused in the case. Then Judge Mohitul Haque Enam read out the charges. And Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud announced the verdict.

Meanwhile, at 11:35 am, the only arrested accused, then ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar of Rampura police station, was produced in the court. The other four accused in the case are absconding.

According to the prosecution, on July 19, 2024, Amir Hossain climbed into an under-construction building on the Banasree-Meradia road in Rampura to save his life from police firing during the student-public movement. At that time, the police also chased him. At one stage, a policeman fired six rounds at him while he was hanging from the roof cornice rod. He was seriously injured but survived. On the same day, Nadeem and Maya Islam were killed in police firing in the Banasree area.
