A man named Mostafa Kazi (65) has been hacked to death over a dispute over a football game in Narail Sadar Upazila. The incident took place at around 3 pm on Friday (July 3) in Maharag village of Bhadrabila union of the upazila.
The deceased Mostafa Kazi is the son of Akmal Kazi of Maharag village.
According to police and local sources, a football match was held between Bhadrabila and Palidanga villages at Bhadrabila Government Primary School ground last Monday (June 29). A dispute arose between the two sides during the game. A mediation meeting was held locally on Thursday to resolve the dispute, but no solution was reached.
Another mediation was scheduled to be held on Friday as well.
Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon, 7 to 8 people ambushed Mustafa Kazi in the area near the market, while he was on his way back to Bhadravila Bazar after shopping at the market. He was seriously injured by a sharp weapon. Later, his relatives rescued him and took him to Narail District Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
After the incident, tension spread in the area, and the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed the incident. He said that a dispute arose between two villages over a football game. Although arbitration was held on Thursday to resolve the matter, it was not resolved. Arbitration was supposed to be held on Friday as well. In the meantime, the attack took place.
He also said that additional police have been deployed in the area. The situation is currently normal. An operation is underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
