Two people drowned in the Meghna River in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi.
The accident occurred on Friday (July 17) afternoon in the Veluachar area of Srinagar Union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Jannati (8), daughter of Nuruzzaman of Veluachar village of Srinagar Union, and Nipa (7), daughter of Saddam Mia of Abdullahpur village of Charsubuddhi Union. The deceased Jannati was a second-grade student of Veluachar Government Primary School.
Relatives of the deceased said that Nipa had come to visit her uncle's house in Veluachar village. In the morning, the two sisters went to bathe in the rainwater collected in a hole next to the house. At that time, they did not know how to swim and drowned. Locals saw the incident and jumped into the water and rescued them.
Later, when their relatives took them to Raipura Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty declared both of them dead.
Raipura Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr. Sheela told reporters that like yesterday, two children who drowned in water from Veluachar were brought to the hospital at around 11 am today. They died before being brought to the hospital.
