The police have announced the arrest of 40 more people in connection with the Awami League procession in Dhaka’s Gulshan, which was banned from holding its activities.

A message sent by the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department on Sunday said that 40 people who were ‘participants in the procession’ were arrested on Saturday night.

However, the details of the names and identities of the arrested were not disclosed in the message.

Earlier, the police had announced the arrest of 32 people who were ‘direct participants’ in the procession on Saturday. As a result, a total of 72 people were arrested after the procession in Gulshan.

On Friday afternoon, a procession was held in Gulshan-1 area with the participation of several hundred Awami League leaders and activists.

When the police tried to disperse them, the marchers exploded two cocktails. The police also fired two rounds of rubber bullets to control the situation.

Several videos of the procession that went viral on social media showed hundreds of people chanting the slogan ‘Joy Bangla’.

Police had reported the arrest of two people with five fresh cocktails from the scene during the procession. On the same day, a case (No. 16) was filed at Gulshan Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the procession.

Police had said on Saturday that a total of 32 people, including two people, had been arrested from the scene.

Meanwhile, Gulshan Police Station SI Ruhul Amin, the investigation officer of the case, produced 24 people in court on Saturday and sought a 10-day remand for each of them. The judge granted them a 10-day remand.
