Housewife dies at brother-in-law’s house, family awaits investigation

A housewife named Sathi Khanam (24) died while visiting her brother-in-law’s house in Lohagara upazila of Narail. The incident took place in the Gopinathpur Beparipara area of the upazila around 5:30 pm on Wednesday (October 21). The family has demanded a proper investigation into the incident and uncovering the real cause. Police said the body will be sent for autopsy.

The deceased Sathi Khanam is the daughter of Khanja Biswas of Baikanthpur village in Naldi union of Lohagara upazila. Her husband’s house is in Dighlia Sahapara of the same upazila. Her husband Shahabul Islam Pakhi has been an expatriate in Saudi Arabia for almost two years. The day before the incident, Sathi had visited her brother-in-law Palash Sheikh’s house. She was accompanied by her three-year-old son Raj.

Palash Sheikh said that he returned home at around 4:30 pm on Wednesday. Sathi talked to them and went to another room. His child was with them. After about half an hour, the child went to that room and found the door locked. When the door did not open despite many knocks, he and his wife knocked. When they did not receive a response, he looked out the window and saw Sathi hanging from the ceiling fan with a veil wrapped around her neck.

Yasin, a tenant of Palash Sheikh’s house, said that when Sathi rang the calling bell of his room at around 3:30 pm, he came out. At that time, Sathi told him that if Palash Sheikh called or asked for something, he should tell him that a man on a motorcycle had come to his house. After that, Yasin closed the door of his room and fell asleep. Later, he claimed that he woke up at around 5:30 pm after hearing screams outside and found Sathi dead.

Khanja Biswas, the father of the deceased, said that Palash Sheikh called him at around 6 pm on Wednesday and told him that his daughter had a problem and asked him to go home quickly. He reached there around 7 pm and found his daughter’s body. He filed a written report of accidental death at Lohagara police station, requesting an investigation and legal action.

Sathi’s mother Nasima Begum said, “My good daughter came to their house yesterday. What happened that she had to commit suicide? I want a proper investigation into the incident, I want justice.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lohagara police station Shariful Islam said that he sent police to the spot after receiving information about the death of a woman in the Beparipara area of Gopinathpur around 5:30 pm on Wednesday. Initially, it was learned that Sathi committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with a veil around her neck.

Police said that the body will be sent for autopsy. Details about the cause of death will be known based on the autopsy report and investigation results.
