Police Couple Arrested for Severing 7-Year-Old Child’s Finger

A police constable and his wife have been arrested on charges of brutally severing a portion of the right index finger of a seven-year-old child. This shocking act of mutilation, triggered by a trivial incident, has caused a stir in the area.

The injured child was initially taken to Natore Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Rajshahi for advanced medical treatment. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a neighborhood of Natore town; following a case filed by the child’s father that night, the accused couple was produced in court on Friday morning.

According to local residents and police sources, the accused constable is stationed in Natore. He lives as a tenant on the second floor of the victim’s father’s house with his wife and four-year-old daughter. A family picnic had been organized at the house on Wednesday night, during which the constable’s daughter and the young boy had a minor scuffle. The matter was resolved amicably within the family at the time.

The child’s father alleged that, following Wednesday’s incident, the constable forcibly took the boy to his rented apartment on Thursday after finishing his duty. Shortly thereafter, the child returned to his own room crying, carrying the severed tip of his right index finger. He told his mother that his finger had been cut off with a vegetable-cutting *hansua* (a curved blade) while his hand was resting on the leg of a bed. The child was immediately rushed to the hospital.

After the incident, the accused constable left the house with his family and went to the Superintendent of Police’s office, verbally claiming that the boy had sexually assaulted his daughter. However, upon receiving the news, the police went to the house and broke open the lock to enter. They discovered bloodstains on the floor and the bed frame, and recovered the severed finger tip from the floor.

The child’s father, a bank official by profession, stated that the children’s interaction and scuffling were natural occurrences given that they lived in the same house and were not serious matters. He demanded justice for the brutal mutilation inflicted upon the child after he was confined in the room. The Officer-in-Charge of the Sadar Police Station stated that the constable couple has not lodged any written complaint. However, the police are treating this extreme and barbaric reaction by adults to the children’s behavior with the utmost seriousness.
