The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman in connection with a case involving allegations of creating disorder, obstructing official duties, and harassing a security officer at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He was arrested on Friday afternoon (October 2) from his residence in the Cantonment area.

Shafiqul Islam, Chief (Additional Commissioner) of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter to the media.

He stated that the arrest was made in the Cantonment area around 6 PM.

Earlier, a case was filed against him for allegedly assaulting an on-duty security officer, obstructing official work, and causing a disturbance at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Airport security officer Mohammad Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case today at the Airport Police Station under various sections of the Penal Code.

Akhtaruzzaman returned to the country yesterday morning (Thursday) after an overseas trip with a delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami. This 70-member delegation, which included 34 Jamaat Members of Parliament, had traveled abroad in two groups on September 13 and 14.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred yesterday around 10:40 AM in the airport’s luggage belt area. The situation arose when passengers arriving from Medina on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 faced delays in retrieving their luggage due to overcrowding and a shortage of trolleys.

The statement further mentions that as the passengers became agitated, Mohammad Kamal Hossain, the Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-5 constituency, asked the airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, to visit the scene.

When Ragib arrived and attempted to bring the situation under control, Akhtaruzzaman became agitated, advanced towards him in an aggressive manner, and verbally abused him.

It is further alleged that Akhtaruzzaman threatened to beat the Executive Director and throw him out by the scruff of his neck. He also made offensive remarks regarding the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The FIR states that the situation escalated when individuals accompanying Akhtaruzzaman began recording videos on their mobile phones inside the airport’s Key Point Installation (KPI) area.

The complaint alleges that when the on-duty security supervisor, Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, asked them not to record videos in the restricted zone, Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused and physically assaulted him.

The case further alleges that Akhtaruzzaman caused damage by knocking bottles of Zamzam water—collected by other passengers—off a trolley and behaved aggressively toward an airline representative.

The complainant noted that this incident obstructed officials from performing their duties at a sensitive, high-security facility and posed a risk to the airport’s normal order and security.

The police have registered the case under Sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504, and 506 of the Penal Code, citing charges such as obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties, causing hurt, use of criminal force, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.

As part of the investigation, authorities may collect CCTV footage, entry and security logs, flight records, eyewitness testimonies, and other relevant evidence.

It is worth noting that Akhtaruzzaman, the former Member of Parliament for the Kishoreganj-2 constituency, joined Jamaat-e-Islami from the BNP last December. Prior to this, he had been expelled from the BNP at least five times.
