An announcement was made over the village mosque’s loudspeaker at night, urging people to gather at the field in the morning with whatever weapons or implements they possessed. A video of the announcement circulated on Facebook. Police took up positions at the site that very night and attempted to mediate between the two factions, but to no avail. Today, Wednesday afternoon, a clash involving mutual chases and physical altercations broke out between the two groups in the presence of the police, leaving at least 30 people injured.
The confrontation, involving mutual chases and clashes, lasted for nearly two hours in the Madhya Tahirpur area of Tahirpur Upazila, Sunamganj. Although the fighting subsided around 2:00 PM, tension remains between the two groups in the area, and police remain deployed at the scene.
According to local residents, a group of teenagers was playing cricket in a field in the Madhya Tahirpur area about a week ago. At that time, a driver was passing by on the adjacent Sunamganj-Tahirpur road in an easy-bike (electric three-wheeler). A ball from the field struck the windshield of the vehicle. This incident led to a verbal altercation between the easy-bike driver—a resident of Madhya Tahirpur (Mymensingh Hati)—and a teenager from Birnagar village, eventually escalating into a scuffle. The following day, two individuals from Madhya Tahirpur assaulted a young man from Birnagar at the Tahirpur market. Since then, tensions had been simmering between the residents of Madhya Tahirpur and those of the villages of Birnagar, Dhutma, Joynagar, and Lakshmipur.
Last night (Tuesday), another scuffle broke out between two youths from the respective villages at the Tahirpur market. Subsequently, around midnight, an announcement was made via the loudspeaker at the Birnagar village mosque, calling on people to gather at the field in the morning with whatever they had. After the video of this announcement spread on Facebook, police deployed to the area that night. People began gathering at the site this morning, and tensions soon flared. Police attempted to halt the ensuing clash, but were unable to do so due to the large number of people involved on both sides. Panic gripped the entire area following an initial exchange of brickbats, which escalated into a series of chases and clashes between the two groups. The confrontation, involving chases and fighting, lasted from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. At least 30 people sustained injuries from brickbats; three of them have been sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.
Billal Hossain, a resident of Madhya Tahirpur village, stated that the major incident stemmed from a trivial matter. He noted that local political leaders could have mediated the dispute, but the clash occurred because timely action was not taken.
Faruk Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tahirpur Police Station, said that upon receiving the report, police arrived at the scene last night and attempted to reason with both parties. The two groups gathered at the site this morning, and at one point, a clash broke out between them. Thirty to forty people were injured by brickbats during the incident. Police remain deployed at the scene, and the situation remains tense.
