Allegations of Herbicide Application in Paddy Fields in Amtali; Estimated Loss of 5 Lakh Taka

Allegations have emerged that salt and herbicides were applied to a paddy field in Athargachhia village, Amtali Upazila, Barguna, resulting in the destruction of the crop. The landowner, Yubraj Hawlader, and his family claim that this incident has caused losses amounting to approximately 5 lakh Taka. The accused, Mamun Peyada, has denied these allegations.

Inquiries made locally on Saturday (October 24, 2026) revealed that the incident reportedly took place in a paddy field located in Athargachhia village, within the Athargachhia Union.

Yubraj Hawlader and his family state that they have been involved in a long-standing dispute with Mamun Peyada regarding a 9-acre, 76-decimal plot of land (in Mouza No. 20). According to them, the land was purchased in 1965 by Mohammad Ramzan Ali Khan and his associates from the late Abdul Ali and his group, and they have been in possession of the land ever since.

The landowners allege that, as part of this ongoing dispute, Mamun Peyada has filed multiple false complaints to harass them. They further claim that he has now damaged their crops by applying salt and herbicides to the paddy field. They have called for a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice.

The accused, Md. Mamun Peyada, has denied the allegations, claiming that a local Union Parishad (UP) member, Lion Talukdar, is conspiring to frame him for the incident.

Meanwhile, UP member Lion Talukdar has denied the conspiracy allegations, stating that the dispute is strictly between Yubraj Hawlader and Mamun Peyada, and that he has no involvement in any such conspiracy.

Md. Moniruzzaman, an Assistant Agriculture Officer for Amtali Upazila, inspected the site and confirmed that herbicides had indeed been applied to the paddy field. The land was expected to yield approximately 200 to 280 maunds of paddy; however, it remains uncertain whether the crop will survive. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Amtali Police Station, Md. Yakub Hossain, stated that no written complaint has been received regarding this incident yet. Once a complaint is filed, an investigation will be conducted and legal action will be taken.
