Patuakhali District Awami League member and former Vice Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad Md. Mizanur Rahman Khan alias Monir Khan (48), who was arrested in multiple cases, has died.

He died while undergoing treatment in the ICU of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday (August 5).

Earlier, a photo of him in handcuffs despite being under treatment in the ICU while dying, went viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion and criticism across the country. Monir Khan’s relatives claim that after the photo went viral, bail was granted in all the cases against him one by one, but as his physical condition did not improve, he could not leave jail or hospital alive; finally, his permanent release was through death.

The deceased Mizanur Rahman Monir Khan is the son of the late Abdul Khalek Khan of Bahalgachia village in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. He was the former general secretary of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila Jubo League, former organizing secretary of the district Jubo League and vice-president of the Bangladesh Rural Development and Cooperative Federation for a long time.

The deceased Mizanur Rahman Monir Khan is the son of the late Abdul Khalek Khan of Bahalgachia village in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. He was the general secretary of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila Jubo League, former organizing secretary of the district Jubo League and vice-president of the Bangladesh Rural Development and Cooperative Federation for a long time.

According to local sources, he had been in hiding since the change of heart on August 5, 2024. On the evening of September 14, 2025, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him from the Mintu Road area of the capital. There were a total of 8 cases against him, including 6 in Dhaka and 2 in Patuakhali Sadar Police Station. After being imprisoned in Dhaka and Patuakhali jails for about 11 months, he was repeatedly detained by showing a hearing arrest in the cases. His wife, Chairman of Kalikapur Union of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila and Organizing Secretary of District Krishak League Mosammad Salma Jahan, was also arrested with her husband and was imprisoned for several days.
