Awami League leader and former minister Dipu Moni’s husband, Supreme Court lawyer Taufiq Nawaz, has passed away at the age of 76. He died at 10:27 pm on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Continental Hospital. Her lawyer said that an application will be filed for Dipu Moni’s release on parole on Wednesday after her husband’s death.

Taufiq Nawaz died at Dhaka’s Continental Hospital on Tuesday night.

Dipu Moni’s elder brother JR Wadud Tipu told the media, “He died at 10:27 pm. He had been receiving treatment at the hospital for a long time.”

Tipu also said that the location and time of the burial and funeral will be decided after Wednesday afternoon.

Taufiq Nawaz suffered a stroke in 2019. Relatives brought him to the International Crimes Tribunal in a wheelchair on April 26 to meet his wife.

Taufiq Nawaz was a Supreme Court lawyer by profession. He also practiced classical music.

Dipu Moni is currently imprisoned in Munshiganj District Jail as an accused in several cases during the July Uprising.

On May 27, his daughter Tani Deepavali Nawaz applied for Dipu Moni to be released on parole for seven days, citing Taufiq Nawaz’s illness. The application made to the Munshiganj District Commissioner did not receive a response.

This time, after his death, an application will be filed for Dipu Moni’s parole again, said his lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam.

He said that the application will be filed with the Munshiganj District Commissioner on Wednesday morning.

Taufiq Nawaz had been suffering from various kidney and liver complications for a long time, said Apel Khakshi, who was in charge of his medical care and treatment. “Tawfiq Nawaz was taken to the hospital after his physical condition deteriorated on Monday.”
