Just two days after signing the defense cooperation agreement with Pakistan, Kuwait has shown interest in signing a comprehensive cooperation agreement with India in the same sector. In continuation of this, a high-level delegation of the Kuwaiti military met with officials of the Indian Ministry of Defense in New Delhi on Friday (August 28) to discuss the possible content of the agreement.

Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Amitabh Prasad led the meeting from India. The meeting was attended by the heads of the three services of the Department of Defense, representatives of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the Armed Forces Medical Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the other hand, the five-member delegation from Kuwait was led by Brigadier General Raed Al Sakran, a senior official of the country’s military.

An official of the Indian Ministry of Defense told the country’s news agency PTI that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kuwait in December 2024. During that visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation was signed between the governments of the two countries. Now, India and Kuwait want to transform that MoU into a more comprehensive and comprehensive agreement.

However, the final structure or content of the proposed agreement has not yet been determined. Various areas of potential cooperation were discussed in Friday’s meeting. It has been reported that military training, joint exercises, medicine required for the armed forces, defense industry and research on weapons and military equipment may be included in the agreement.

Defense agreement with Pakistan too

Earlier, Kuwait signed a defense cooperation agreement called ‘Protocol Agreement-2026’ with Pakistan in Islamabad on Thursday, August 27. A statement issued by the Kuwaiti military after the agreement said that its main objective is to significantly increase mutual cooperation between the two countries in the defense and military sectors.

Immediately after signing the agreement with Pakistan, Kuwait showed interest in further expanding defense cooperation with India. As a result, the Gulf country has taken the initiative to strengthen defense ties with two rival countries in South Asia at the same time.
