The burial of about 100 Palestinian bodies recovered from under the rubble in the northern Gaza Strip has been completed. Last Sunday (September 6, 2026), these bodies, which were recovered from the rubble in the Zeitoun area of ​​Gaza, were buried by their relatives in the Al-Mamadani cemetery in central Gaza City. According to a report by the international media Al Jazeera, about 60 of the buried bodies are children.

Relatives and members of the Civil Defense Force recovered these bodies from the rubble of houses destroyed by an Israeli attack in the Zeitoun area of ​​Gaza after weeks of effort. A large part of those rescued are members of the ‘Malaka’ family. At least 55 members of the same family lost their lives in this tragic attack.

Al Jazeera’s Ghazi al-Aloul said that after a long wait, families were finally able to identify their loved ones and bury them in proper cemeteries. However, many families in Gaza are still deprived of that opportunity, as many cemeteries in Gaza have been destroyed and dug up by Israeli attacks.

Rescue workers said that many of the bodies recovered were no longer intact; only fragments of bones and accessories had to be wrapped in shrouds and buried. The situation was even more tragic for children.

The head of the Gaza Civil Defense Department, Raed al-Dahshan, said that an estimated 8,000 bodies were still buried under the rubble. If the necessary heavy machinery, cranes and rescue equipment were allowed to enter Gaza, the bodies could be recovered in about 90 days. However, the rescue work could take several years to complete due to the lack of necessary equipment due to the Israeli blockade.

Efforts are currently underway to identify the bodies based on information from surviving relatives and signs collected by engineers. “These scenes are a reminder of the extreme horror of the Gaza conflict,” said Ajit Sungei, head of the UN human rights office. Some of the bodies recovered date back to November 2023.

According to the latest figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 73,651 Palestinians have been killed and 174,592 injured in the ongoing Israeli offensive since October 2023.

Local authorities said that hundreds of bodies, including more than 500 from the Al-Taj Tower and more than 100 members of the Abu Sharia and Hassaniya families, have been recovered from the rubble in recent weeks.
