A court has rejected the bail plea of a 17-year-old teenager in the case involving the death of Mehedi Hasan Mim, a construction worker who was run over by a car while sitting on a footpath in the capital’s Baridhara area.

Judge Md. Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka’s Juvenile Court-8 issued the order rejecting bail on Wednesday following a hearing. State counsel Mohammad Sharif Uddin (Mamun) confirmed the information.

He said, “They sought bail citing his status as a juvenile and claiming a settlement had been reached with the plaintiff. The plaintiff was also present in court. We, representing the state, opposed the bail. Subsequently, the court ordered the rejection of the bail plea.”

Former Dhaka Bar Association President Khorshed Mia Alam argued the bail plea on behalf of the teenager. The same court had previously rejected his bail application on October 4.

On September 22, around 5 PM, a speeding private car lost control and ran over 24-year-old Mehedi Hasan Mim while he was resting on the footpath of Road No. 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone. He was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Bystanders at the scene detained the teenager who was in the driver’s seat and handed him over to the police. However, following questioning, he was released into his uncle’s custody that same night.

Mehedi’s brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case at Gulshan Police Station on September 23 regarding the death. Although the car’s driver, Akash Marak, was named as an accused in the case, the teenager who had been in the driver’s seat was not included.

Following public criticism regarding the matter, Gulshan Police took the teenager into custody on September 23. On September 24, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam of Gulshan Police Station, produced him in court and requested that he be detained at a juvenile development center.

The court ordered the teenager to be sent to the Tongi Juvenile Development Center in Gazipur. On that day, the teenager’s lawyer, Alamgir Hossain, informed reporters that the case had been settled for Tk 9 lakh.
