A physically challenged van driver, Md. Mosharaf Hossain (65), has been left in severe hardship after his three-wheeled van—the family’s sole source of income—was stolen while he was offering Maghrib prayers at Jotmora Boro Jame Mosque in Jaduboyra Union of Kumarkhali Upazila, Kushtia.
According to local sources, Mosharaf parked his van in front of the mosque on June 2 before entering for prayers. Upon returning, he discovered that the van, valued at approximately BDT 70,000, had been stolen. After searching in various places without success, he filed a written complaint with Kumarkhali Police Station the following day.
Mosharaf said that he suffered a serious leg injury in a road accident several years ago and has since been living with physical limitations. Despite his condition, he earned his livelihood by driving the van, making around BDT 400–500 per day to support his family. Since the theft, he, his ailing wife, elderly mother, and other family members have been struggling to meet their basic needs.
His wife, Aloya Khatun, said the van was their only means of income and the family’s primary support for medical expenses and daily necessities. She added that they are now facing extreme financial difficulties.
Local residents stated that Mosharaf does not have the financial ability to purchase a new van. They urged the government and financially capable members of society to come forward and assist the family so they can return to a normal life.
Rabiul Islam, a member of the Jotmora Boro Jame Mosque Management Committee, said that CCTV footage captured the theft, but the suspect could not be identified. He added that the mosque committee would try to provide assistance within its capacity.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jamal Uddin of Kumarkhali Police Station said that the complaint is being investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
Farzana Akhtar, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Kumarkhali, said that the administration would look into the matter and provide assistance as much as possible. She also called upon affluent members of society to extend their support to the distressed family.
