Former Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on bail from Dubai prison in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Her family sources have claimed that she is trying to go to a European country after her release.

On Sunday (August 2), Benazir Ahmed’s family sources said that she is preparing to leave Dubai for a European country after her release last Thursday (July 30) after completing the legal process.

Earlier, a Dubai court granted her bail application on July 27.

However, as per the court’s bail conditions, Benazir Ahmed will not be able to leave Dubai and her passport will remain with the court.

Meanwhile, the National Central Bureau (NCB), the Interpol branch of the Dhaka Police Headquarters, said that it is not aware of any official information about Benazir’s release. No official statement was received from the police in this regard till noon.

It is learned that a hearing was held in a Dubai court on both sides regarding the extradition documents and legal proceedings sent by the Bangladesh government. After the hearing, the court granted her conditional bail.

Benazir Ahmed was arrested in Dubai in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). She was arrested with the assistance of Dubai Police and the international police organization Interpol. Dubai Police informed the Bangladesh authorities about the matter through a letter on June 12.

The ACC has filed multiple cases against Benazir Ahmed on charges of illegal acquisition of wealth and money laundering. Legal action was taken against her at the international level as part of the investigation into these allegations.

Benazir Ahmed served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. Before that, she was the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on seven RAB officials for human rights violations. Benazir Ahmed’s name was also on that list.

The ACC began investigating Benazir Ahmed after allegations of corruption came to light a few months before the Awami League government was ousted in the 2024 mass uprising. She left the country soon after the allegations surfaced. She currently faces multiple cases and court-issued arrest warrants.
