25 families affected by the erosion of Teesta in Kaliganj, Lalmonirhat have been waiting for hours at the Kaliganj Upazila Parishad premises in the hope of a packet of dry food. They have expressed anger and disappointment at not getting food despite waiting for a long time.
On Sunday (August 9) afternoon, when they returned to the ground, it was seen that men, women and children of these families affected by the erosion of Teesta in the Bairati area were staying there in the hope of food. Many of them said that they were facing a food crisis due to lack of work as they are day laborers. They also said that last Wednesday, they gave a photocopy of their NID card to the project implementation officer.
The victims alleged that no effective initiative was taken in their regard even though they were at the Upazila Parishad premises since morning. Many of them went hungry while waiting for a packet of dry food.
Although attempts were made to contact the Kaliganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) on his mobile phone several times to get his statement on the matter, he did not answer the call.
The affected families have demanded immediate food and necessary assistance.
