
A 14-day-old newborn baby boy was killed by his mother in Begumganj, Noakhali. Police said the murder was committed because the baby was crying and disturbed his sleep.
The newborn’s mother, Fatema Begum (19), has been taken into police custody for questioning in this incident. The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Monday at Sourav’s house adjacent to Majumdarhat in Ward No. 4 of Mirwarishpur Union of the upazila.
The deceased newborn is the son of Sourav Hossain of the house. Fatema Begum is the daughter of Sharif Ulya of Narottampur Union of the upazila.
Locals said that Sourav Hossain and Fatema Begum got married in November 2025 due to a love affair. There had been strife in their marital life since the marriage. When the newborn was not found after Monday evening, the family members questioned Fatima.
At that time, Fatima first claimed that unknown persons had hit her on the head from behind and taken the child. Later, she said that the child had been taken on a donkey. When the family members became suspicious of her statement, they started searching in various places.
At one stage, the body of the newborn was recovered from a plastic drum kept for storing rainwater in the house around 10 pm.
According to the police, at one stage of the interrogation, Fatima confessed to killing her child by throwing it into the drum. The child was crying excessively, which disturbed her sleep, and she told the police that she was upset and threw the child into the drum.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamsuzzaman said that her mother Fatima Begum has been taken into police custody on charges of killing the newborn by throwing it into the water. In this incident, the father of the child who died, Sourav Hossain, has filed a murder case with Begumganj Police Station, accusing Fatema Begum.
He also said that Fatema Begum will be sent to court on Tuesday afternoon after the legal process.
