The Election Commission (EC) has issued a formal notification declaring Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The notification signed by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission, Akhtar Ahmed, was issued after the results were announced at the Parliament House on Thursday (August 20).

The notification said that in accordance with Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991 (Act No. 27 of 1991), the Returning Officer and the Election Commissioner have declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected as the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in accordance with Rule 12(6) of the Presidential Election Rules, 1991.

Voting for the presidential election has been held in the National Assembly after a long period of almost 35 years. After the counting of votes, the name of BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was officially announced as the 23rd President of the country.

The announcement was made by Election Officer and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin after counting the votes at 5 pm. He said that there were a total of 349 voters in the election. Of them, 343 votes were cast.

According to the CEC announcement, BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir got 255 votes and opposition alliance candidate Oli Ahmed got 88 votes.

After the CEC announcement, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman greeted newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with red roses.
