112-page full judgment has been released in the Supreme Court in the sensational madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s murder case of Sonagazi, Feni. In this verdict, among the 16 accused sentenced to death by the judicial court, the death sentence of 2 was upheld, the sentence of 4 was reduced to life imprisonment and 10 were acquitted.

A copy of the full judgment was published on the Supreme Court’s official website today, Tuesday (8 September 2026).

Earlier on August 24, Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Rajar High Court Bench announced the verdict.

The two accused who were upheld by the High Court’s verdict are the then Principal of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa Siraj Udaula (57) and Shahadat Hossain Shamim (20).

Those who were commuted to life imprisonment were Noor Uddin, Javed Hossain alias Sakhawat Hossain, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zubair and Umme Sultana alias Popi.

On the other hand, 10 people have been acquitted from the case. They are – Kamrun Nahar Moni, Hafez Abdul Quader, Mohammad Shamim, Mohiuddin Shakeel, Imran Hossain alias Mamun, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, then President of Sonagazi Upazila Awami League and former Vice President of Madrasa Ruhul Amin, Abshar Uddin and former General Secretary and then Councilor of Sonagazi Town Awami League. According to the details of the case, on March 27, 2019, Nusrat’s mother Shireen Akhtar filed a case against Siraj-Uddaula, principal of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa, for sexual abuse. Police arrested Siraj-Uddaula in that case.

His loyal cadres became active to free the principal from jail and withdraw the case. On 3 April they visited the jail and met Siraj and on 4 April planned to kill Nusrat in the madrasa dormitory as suggested.

As planned, on April 6, when Nusrat Aleem went to the madrasa to take the exam, the assassins took her to the roof of the cyclone shelter. There an attempt was made to kill him by setting him on fire. Nusrat was first taken to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex and later to Feni 250 bed hospital with severe burns. He was later shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College (DMH) Hospital as his condition was critical. Nusrat died there on April 10 while undergoing treatment.

After the incident, Nusrat’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman filed a case at Sonagazi police station on April 8. After the charge sheet was submitted on May 28, 2019, the trial began on June 20 in the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal.

In just 61 working days, after taking the testimony and arguments of 87 people, on October 24, 2019, the lower court ordered the death penalty for all 16 accused. Later, after the final hearing of the appeals and death references of the accused, the High Court Bench of the Supreme Court passed this new verdict.
