Police reported coming under attack while attempting to apprehend suspects involved in an assault—carried out with machetes and *ramdas* (large curved blades)—during an attempt to seize a building amidst a land dispute in Dhaka’s Adabar area. Two individuals were injured by police gunfire during the incident, and a total of 10 people have been arrested.
Adabar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahidul Islam Jahangir stated that the incident occurred around 2:00 AM on Monday along the canal bank behind the ‘Mela Math’ (fairground), adjacent to the Nabodoy Housing Kitchen Market.
He explained that police had been conducting ongoing raids across various areas to arrest those involved. Acting on a tip-off that some of the accused were present at the canal bank, the police launched an operation there.
“At one stage of the operation, we spotted seven or eight miscreants at the scene. When we attempted to arrest them, they tried to attack us with the machetes they were carrying.
“A police officer then fired two rounds in self-defense, injuring two of them.”
OC Jahangir stated that four individuals, including the two injured, were arrested at the scene.
The arrested individuals are Rajib Howlader (30), Sagar alias ‘Chhoto Bigar’ (24), Shakib (23), and Rashed (24).
Among them, Rajib and Sagar sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. They were subsequently rescued and taken to Suhrawardy Hospital.
According to the OC, “The other suspects managed to flee. Sharp steel machetes, samurai swords, and *kris* (wavy-bladed daggers) were recovered from them.” Meanwhile, the DMP has announced in a statement that a total of 10 individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on a house in Adabar, where a *chapati* (heavy cleaver) was used. Police reported that six of these individuals were arrested on Monday.
Last Saturday morning, a group of 20 to 25 people vandalized the gate, windows, and security CCTV cameras of a house located on Road No. 6 of the Shyamoli Housing (Phase 1) project in the Shekhertek area of Adabar.
Relatives of the building’s owner allege that a local man named Khorshed Alam had previously seized control of the building in a similar manner following the events of August 5, 2024.
After completing legal proceedings involving the courts and police, the owners regained possession of the building on March 12. However, another attack has occurred within just a few months.
Relatives of the owner claim that during the attack, they called the national emergency service number (999) but did not receive immediate police assistance.
The incident was captured on another CCTV camera, and the footage has since circulated on social media.
The video initially shows a masked individual speaking on a mobile phone. Subsequently, a group of youths armed with weapons arrives and vandalizes three CCTV cameras at the house one by one. They are then seen hacking at the windows and the main gate with sharp weapons.
The victim later filed a written complaint at the Adabar Police Station regarding the incident. In response, the police have reported the arrest of 10 individuals accused of involvement in the attack.
