The Chamber Court has stayed the bail of Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, an accused in the case involving the public killing of businessman Lal Chand—alias Sohag—by striking him with a stone near Mitford Hospital in Dhaka. Chamber Judge Md. Rezaul Haque issued this order on Sunday following a hearing on the state’s petition challenging the High Court’s bail order.
On September 28, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Ruhul Quddus and Justice Syed Hasan Zobair granted six months’ interim bail to Mohin, the prime accused. Simultaneously, the court issued a rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.
Regarding the High Court’s bail decision, Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shazia Sharmin stated that the court granted interim bail based on the lack of specific allegations against Mohin. Although the bail was granted on September 28, the matter came to public attention on Thursday.
Lawyer Mohammad Asaduzzaman argued the bail petition on Mohin’s behalf in the High Court.
When asked about the state’s next steps following the bail, Attorney General Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol told reporters that the state would file a petition (leave to appeal) with the Appellate Division seeking a stay of the bail order.
On Sunday, the Chamber Court stayed Mohin’s bail after hearing the state’s petition.
On the afternoon of July 9, 2025, Sohag—alias Lal Chand, a trader of scrap materials and old cables—was publicly killed in front of Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital; his body and head were crushed with a concrete boulder. Widespread criticism erupted after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
According to police and locals, the individuals seen participating in the murder and those whose names have surfaced as being involved behind the scenes were all previously acquainted with one another. Some of them had even been business associates of Sohag at one time.
Sohag’s elder sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a case at Kotwali Police Station regarding the incident. On December 8 of last year, the investigating officer—Inspector Moniruzzaman of Kotwali Police Station—submitted the charge sheet against 21 accused individuals. On July 12, the court ordered the commencement of the trial for the accused in this case.
