Attempt to Erase Rabindranath’s Portrait: Court Grants Remand for Four

A court has granted a three-day remand for two individuals and a two-day remand for the other two, following their arrest in connection with an attempt to erase—using ink—a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore painted on a wall in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha area.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court issued this order on Sunday, acting on a petition filed by the investigating officer.

Earlier, the police had formally recorded the arrests of the four individuals in a sedition case.

Md. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbag Police Station, stated that when the four were produced before the court on Sunday, a seven-day remand was sought for each of them.

“The remand application was made after they were produced in court today,” he said.

On Saturday afternoon, a group of people faced police obstruction while attempting to erase the portrait of Rabindranath Tagore painted on a wall in front of the Shilpakala Academy.

Four individuals were subsequently detained in connection with the incident. The detainees are A.N.M. Ayas (Member Secretary of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum), Md. Sakibul Hasan, Md. Sujan Mia, and Marjia Khandaker Rimi.

Of them, the court granted a three-day remand for Ayas and Sakibul Hasan, and a two-day remand for Sujan Mia and Marjia Khandaker Rimi.

Earlier, on October 5, the Dhaka South City Corporation had cleared the footpath in Segunbagicha of encroachments. Subsequently, portraits of ten eminent personalities who contributed to art, literature, and culture—including Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, Satyajit Ray, and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar—were painted on the wall adjacent to the footpath.
