Speech-impaired sanitation worker Bobby Begum (70), who was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants at Methikanda Railway Station in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi, has died.

She died in an ambulance on her way to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment at 1:15 am on Tuesday (July 7).

Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Masud Rana confirmed the matter to the media.

It is learned that a group of miscreants entered a room at the Methikanda Railway Station of the upazila late on July 4 and brutally attacked Bobby Begum. During this, they beat her up and looted her hard-earned and saved money of 40,000 taka. Later, the station staff rescued her and admitted her to the Raipura Upazila Health Complex.

After receiving primary treatment, she was brought back to the station. After that, although she was somewhat better, her physical condition suddenly deteriorated on Wednesday night. She was first taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex, but the doctor on duty referred her to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for better treatment. However, she died in an ambulance at 1:15 am before reaching the hospital.

Meanwhile, the news of Bobby Begum’s death cast a shadow of grief across Raipura late at night. Condolences were expressed on various circles including social media Facebook over the death of this homeless and kinless woman. At the same time, people from all walks of life demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack.

According to local sources, Bobby Begum had been working as a cleaner at Methikanda Railway Station for about 25 years. She had no relatives.

She lived in a small room in the station. Despite her age and speech impediment, she diligently kept the station clean and tidy. Her life was lived on a small salary and the support of passengers. The brutal attack on the helpless woman and her subsequent death have caused widespread outrage in the area.
