The court has ordered the collection of DNA samples of two more former army personnel suspected in the murder of Sohagi Jahan, a student of Comilla Victoria Government College and theatre activist.

On Tuesday (July 21), the investigation officer of the case and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Dhaka district inspector Md. Tariqul Islam confirmed the information to Asia Post.

PBI sources said that the order was issued by Senior Judicial Magistrate Mominul Haque of Comilla Administrative Court No. 1 on July 17 in response to an application made in the interest of investigation.

The two new DNA tests ordered are Zahidul Islam, son of Solaiman Hossain of Meghai village in Sirajganj, and Faisal Ahmed Rabbi, son of MA Hannan of Rajapara Laxminagar area in Comilla. Both of them are former army personnel.

Investigation Officer Inspector Tariqul Islam said that DNA testing is very important to unravel the real mystery of the case and identify the killers. Earlier, DNA samples of former warrant officer Hafizur Rahman, who was arrested in the case, have been collected.

Meanwhile, sources in the investigation of the case have revealed that the two main suspects, retired sergeant Zahiduzzaman and former army member Shahinul Alam, are currently absconding. The court has ordered a ‘red notice’ to be issued through Interpol to arrest them. The PBI believes that accused Shahin Alam has fled to Kuwait. However, Zahiduzzaman’s whereabouts have not yet been identified.

The only accused arrested in the case, former warrant officer Hafizur Rahman, is currently in the Comilla Central Jail.

On the evening of March 20, 2016, Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a student of the history department of Victoria College and a theater activist, went missing while giving tuition in the Comilla Cantonment area. Later, his body was recovered from the bushes adjacent to the power house of the cantonment. Despite a lengthy investigation into this brutal murder, which has been discussed across the country, the case has not yet been finally resolved in court.
