Truck breaks down in Sahara desert, 50 die of thirst

Fifty people have died in a remote area of Niger’s Sahara desert after a truck broke down due to intense heat and dehydration. They died after being stranded without water in the extremely hostile environment of the desert. However, two people miraculously survived this terrible disaster. They walked about 50 kilometers across the hot sand of the desert and informed the administration about the matter.

The French media outlet France 24 reported this information in a report.

The truth of the incident was confirmed in a Facebook post on Thursday (June 4) by the governor’s office of the Agadez region in Niger. Local authorities said that the deceased were returning home from Mali after completing a Muslim religious festival. Along the way, the truck carrying them broke down in the desert, about 80 kilometers west of the town of Assamaka on the border of Niger and Algeria.

The governor’s office said in a statement, “After the water ran out, the driver, his assistant and passengers were unable to repair the vehicle despite their best efforts. The passengers were trapped in the hostile environment due to the intense heat and lack of any water source. Survival was impossible.” Later, an administration rescue team went to the scene and buried the dead in the desert.

The administration said that the two survivors of this horrific incident had walked 50 kilometers to save their lives. Walking in the extreme heat of the desert, they first found a water source. Later, they reached the town of Asamaka and told the local authorities about the whole matter.

This region of the Sahara Desert is used as one of the main routes for migrants from different countries of the African continent to Europe. Human traffickers often use this route. Local experts said that migrants and ordinary passengers often die in this remote desert due to intense heat, dust storms and lack of food and water.
