The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced 59 defendants in 7 cases for crimes against humanity committed on July 24. Of these, 13 have been sentenced to death. The remaining defendants have been sentenced to various terms, including life imprisonment. Law Minister Asaduzzaman gave this information in response to a question from Netrokona-5 constituency member Masum Mustafa during the Question Hour of the National Assembly on Sunday.

A question-and-answer table was presented under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. In it, State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari said that the recruitment process for 2,879 vacant posts in the Ministry of Public Administration will be completed within the next 6 months, 4,459 within a year, and 3,110 within 5 years.

In response to a question from Jamaat-e-Islami MP Mustafa, the Law Minister further said that 80 cases have been filed for crimes against humanity committed in July. Of these, 7 have been decided and 73 are under process. Of the 73 cases in which the process is ongoing, 22 are at the stage of taking testimony and 51 are under investigation.

The Minister said that there are a total of 463 accused in the cases of crimes against humanity. Of these, 174 have been arrested, 288 are absconding, one has died and one has been acquitted.

In response to another member’s question, the Law Minister said that there are 1,964 judges working against the 2,620 judges across the country. The process of appointing judges to the vacant posts is under way, the Minister said. The Minister said that the government has recently established 650 civil judges and senior judges’ courts, 406 joint sessions judges’ courts, and 204 additional sessions judges’ courts. The government is actively considering the issue of creating judges’ posts against the newly established courts.

In response to a question from Nilofar Chowdhury Moni of the reserved seat, Law Minister Asaduzzaman said that the number of cases pending in family courts across the country is 119,830. 163 family courts and 65 family appeal courts have been established across the country for the speedy disposal of family cases.

He said that it is not possible to calculate the exact statistics of how many harassing and false cases have been filed against BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists across the country and the government does not have specific information in this regard.

He said, however, according to information received from the BNP central office, a total of 142,983 false and harassing cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists from 2007 to January 11, 2025. The government does not have statistics on how many cases were filed against Jamaat leaders and activists during the fascist era.

The Law Minister said that so far, 23,865 cases filed for political reasons have been withdrawn.

The State Minister for Public Administration said that according to the updated manpower information of government employees as of December 31, 2023, out of the 4,68,220 vacancies, there are 68,884 in the first class (1st-9th), 1,29,166 in the second class (10th-12th), 1,46,799 in the third class (13th-16th), 1,15,235 in the fourth class (17th-20th) and 8,136 in others (honorary, fixed-salary and contractual – those who are in different classes).
